Chapter Twenty-One

SONJA HESTER

The night before, Sonja had eventually called a cab to take her to Bixby. Even though she knew he wouldn’t be there, she searched the bar and restaurant for Jay. When she didn’t find him, she couldn’t stay to enjoy the party.

On the way back to the hotel, she'd called Elaine and asked her if she had sent some guy to the compound to collect Jay.

“I haven’t heard from him, but you do remember, right?” Elaine asked.

Sonja scrubbed her scalp, racked by anxiety and frustration. “Remember what?”

She was overly familiar with the tone of Elaine’s voice. Her sister wanted something Sonja wasn’t supposed to refuse, especially now that she should’ve thanked Elaine profusely for her brand new career.

“Aren’t you my maid of honor?”

She sighed briskly, wondering if that was a trick question. “Aren’t I always?”

“I spoke to Robin, and she told me you’re traipsing off to the jungle.”

“I don’t know about that anymore.”

Elaine was silent.

“Hello?” Sonja asked.

“I’ll call you back. Gotta go.” She hung up.

That was the last time Sonja actually wanted to speak to Elaine. Next, she’d called Dexter and left a message. He had flown back to New York shortly after production wrapped. She was hoping he could shed some light on whatever business Jay had that was so important he couldn’t tell her he was leaving.

After that phone call, worry continued to attack her until she developed a throbbing headache. There was nothing more to do but go back to her room, book the first flight she could find out of Vancouver, pack, and head to the airport.

As Sonja waited for her early morning flight to board, she felt as though her head was being squeezed by a vise. Her weary eyes searched every face see in the terminal, hoping one would be Jay. She hadn’t eaten, and her body still sought to make up for all the sleep it had been denied over the months. She felt like a zombie, trapped between being alive and dead. Finally her flight was called.

As the plane soared through the sky, all she could think about was what to do next. Even when she tried to get some shut-eye, her brain wouldn’t allow it. She hoped Dexter would’ve returned her call by the time she landed. Since her car was parked at Jay’s place and she had the gate code, she would go straight to his house.

Sonja tried to keep her insecurities from narrating the situation. Jay hadn’t just up and left because he wanted to get away from her. She tried to think about all the nights they’d spent in bed, barely awake but unable to sleep because they had so much to talk about. They were still best friends who laughed at the same things, even when no one else was laughing. Every now and then, before the weather had started cooling off, they would sneak off to a watering hole on a stranger’s property to swim.

They still spent their leisure time watching movies together. They would have conversations about what was going on around them and in the world.
